  Dear Sisters

Allow me to wish you all a belated Happy New Year in February!

I hope that the year has started well, with everyone looking forward to make the best of 2016.

The purpose of this letter is to inform and engage all ExSSA UK members, ahead of the March GM, about the progress we have made on the Nutrition Lab refurbishment project, and what we need to achieve before we get to the GM in March.

  Progress so far…
As you are all aware, ExSSA UK embarked on enhancing the nutrition lab in Saker last December 2015; starting with the tiling and some necessary decorating before equipping the lab. Mrs Janet Kokovi Kale took the responsibility to engage and supervise the workers, who completed the work satisfactorily within the allocated time, over the Christmas holidays. The girls returned to school in January to an impressively refurbished nutrition lab – fully tiled and painted!

I also made a trip to Saker in January to inspect the work that had been done and was delighted and proud of what we had achieved in a short space of time, thanks to the cooperation and team spirit of everyone! In fact, our patrons will be equally proud of us when we report back to them at this coming August Convention!

  Next immediate steps…
The detailed needs assessment of the nutrition lab confirmed that only 2 of all 10 cookers were in working order, and the fridges were completely broken down. There is thus a need to replace at least 8 cookers and 2 fridges for an efficient and effective functioning of the lab.

Allow me to introduce here the “Stepping in the Light” Initiative – an initiative developed by our Trustee and Project Leader, Mrs Janet Kokovi Kale, to raise funds for all the equipment, appliances, and utensils, and possibly some furniture and structural requirements of the nutrition lab. After its introduction at the London regional meeting this Saturday, a flyer which explains the “Stepping in the Light” initiative in practical detail will be circulated to all ExSSA UK members.

In line with the deadline for this phase of the nutrition project, the objective of which is to ensure that the current students benefit form the refurbished nutrition lab, we propose to use this “Stepping in the Light” initiative, to put out a call this weekend on SakerPride to raise sufficient funding by the end of the month. This will be in addition to any funds that the regions can contribute towards realising the important nutrition lab project undertaken by ExSSA UK.

I urge you all ladies, to start sensitising your friends, associates, other organisations or grant-making bodies to act by donating in Cash via SakerPride or in Kind by contacting ExSSA UK via: executives@exssa-uk.org

We are excited about the novel “Stepping in the Light” initiative and hope we can count on your support to ensure we achieve generous donations by the end of February. This will allow us to buy and install the cookers and fridges in time for the girls’ GCE preparation. Please look out for the announcement on SakerPride by the close of this weekend! You will be wowed!

Any questions or concerns, kindly email ExSSA UK exec at executives@exssa-uk.org

  With my best wishes
  Irene Tamajong

Hi Egbe

D-day weekend! Happy Valentines day in advance!

I finally got round to taking the next step on this nutrition lab project, with Koko's unwavering support, and would like to share with you the update I sent to the UK members yesterday, FYI.

We are due to have our regional meeting this evening and will alert you once done. Koko assures me you have collaborated on the fine details of launching the Stepping in the Light fundraising initiative.

As usual, many thanks in advance for your committed and valuable work!

Best wishes
Irene

SAKERPRIDE APPEAL ...

DEAR SAKERETTES:
I don't see anything intrinsically wrong with the "MAXI-WITH-BROKING" plus "EYE SHADOW & WEAVE" part of our signature SAKERETTE "SHOW-SHOW", but, when all's said and done; when push comes to shove, THE ONLY SHOW-SHOW that really matters is the kind that has a lasting effect and positively impacts someone else - in this case, our DAUGHTERS, GRAND DAUGHTERS, NIECES, SISTERS, & COUSINS who are either currently enrolled in SAKER BAPTIST COLLEGE, or will be in the (near) future! PLEASE, DONATE!

DEAR FUTURE FATHERS, MOTHERS, UNCLES & AUNTS-IN-LAW:
Now is the time to invest in developing and advancing the culinary skills of your future DAUGHTERS-IN-LAW who are currently enrolled in SBC and guarantee that your son/nephew will - having duly paid the bride price and married his "RAT" in the Kontri, in Church and in the Court, (hopefully), come back home everyday to far more than just "Col' Water Garri" - except for the once-in-a-lifetime "teach him a lesson" episode!!! PLEASE, DONATE and eliminate any cause for your grandchildren to sing that "WHICH KIND SOUP MAMMY COOK'AM" song!!!!!

DEAR PARENTS, FRIENDS, COLLEAGUES, "CATS", SIGNIFICANT OTHERS (as in "KWAKUs") OF SAKERETTES and WELL-WISHERS, ALL YOU NEED TO DO TO DONATE IS CLICK ON THIS LINK!!!!

SUGGESTIONS:
- YOU COULD GET TOGETHER AS A CLASS, AS A FAMILY,  OR AN ASSOCIATION, and PURCHASE A GAS COOKER OR FRIDGE!
- YOU COULD TEAM UP WITH ANOTHER GROUP/CHAPTER & CONTRIBUTE!
- YOU COULD MAKE A DONATION OR PURCHASE ONE OF THE ITEMS IN HONOR OF A LOVED ONE (LIVING OR DEPARTED) OR,
- YOU COULD PURCHASE ONE, SEVERAL OR ALL OF THE ITEMS BY YOUR OWN "BAD" SELF

Dear Egbe,
From my nest in Bamako -Mali I do not have access to GOFUNDME . However, I hereby undertake to send 245,000 CFA to cover the cost of one cooker/oven for the cookery lab refurbishment drive. I was shocked by the sorry state of the utensils through the pictures you sent. ... I am a one ExSSAN delegation here but who believes very strongly in the merit and worth of a good kitchen, having been raised by my senior sister, Mathilda Etondi Effange, (mother of Late ExSSAN Maloke Obase Viola Efimba) who is a well renowned culinary pace setter in her own right . In fact, my contribution to this drive is to celebrate her prowess and legacy in cookery . Find attached a picture of my 60th Birthday celebrated in pomp in Buea . The CHEF made that cake and was by my side with Auntie Ruth Ndando ---just the tip of the ice berg of my sister’s several attributes!!!! .

THE TAYUIS, BACK IN THE DAY ...

It's barely been 3 months since Class of 81's Mrs. Beatrice Mensah Tayui and her CAT, Dr. Ebenezer Tayui organized a Thanksgiving Service & Reception to honor Ma TAYUI on December 17 2015 in Down Beach Presbyterian Church and at their Limbe Residence respectively.
Looks like Beatrice felt that wasn't quite enough so when Ma SakerPride let her know about the STEPPING IN THE LIGHT drive, (AFTER it had been on for a little bit) her instant reaction was: "How much money is left for you to meet your goal?" We were $2,060 dollars short at the time, and that is the EXACT AMOUNT that was written (in letters and numbers), on the check that was delivered to Ma SakerPride's VERANDA a few days later!!!!! And because some other compassionate people had donated in the mean time, this WHOPPING amount ended up helping the SAKERPRIDE "wing" of the STEPPING IN THE LIGHT Campaign not just REACH, but wildly SURPASS it's $6,000 Target!!!
THANK YOU, Mammy BABA for being the kind of Mother-In-Law who is able to incite THIS MUCH GRATITUDE from a Daughter-In-Law, (when most can barely stand theirs, LOL), and BLESS YOUR GRATEFUL & GENEROUS HEART, Dear Beatrice Mensah Tayui, CULINARY WIZ in your own right!!!
THANK YOU for helping provide the opportunity for some Saker Girl to develop, perfect and hone their own Culinary prowess through Saker Baptist College's henceforth ROBUST, STATE OF THE ART "FOOD & NUTRITION" Program. Many an ACCOMPLISHED CATERER will one day TESTIFY ...

Hi big sis.
Sorry I have been silent.
Just to say that I have sent 100,000 CFA as I had promised. A Colleague and friend of mine called Stella XXXXX will deposit the money at XXXXX tomorrow.

And then this envelope landed on Ma SakerPride's  doorstep ...
... and here is the "outcome" this EASTER MONDAY!!!
And might I have forgotten to mention that the Food & Nutrition Students have since taken their MOCK GCE EXAM in the most delightful of conditions??? GLORY BE!!!!!
Mr. Michael BALINGA
At the close of the SakerPride wing of the ExSSA-UK led Fundraiser to EQUIP SBC's COOKERY LAB, the amount collected stood at a very impressive $5,531, just $469 shy of the $6,000 goal SakerPride had targeted! BUT, AS GOD WOULD HAVE IT, that Goal has not just been MET, but SURPASSED (after the fact), without a single additional plea for assistance! Here's how!!!
Don't know how else to narrate this story except to just "COPY & PASTE" the actual conversation I had with this little brother of mine that I have kept in touch with via Facebook, but haven't set eyes on since 1981 (Grand Messa - Yaounde)!!!!

STEPPING IN THE LIGHT PROJECT DONORS WHO DONATED DIRECTLY INTO ExSSA-UK ACCOUNT

John Davis (CITY DINING): 100 Pounds
WHAT IS THE STEPPING IN THE LIGHT (SITL) PHENOMENON?
SITL is an initiative to introduce the ExSSA UK Charity arm through which we aim to undertake projects which make a difference to the Learning Experience of the students of Saker Baptist College.

Why the Learning Environment?
On this occasion, ExSSA UK is supporting Education outcomes. SBC’s academic achievement as reflected in the GCE results speaks for itself. However, one can argue that developing practical skills and social attitudes is also a vital outcome in the overall education for the “Girl Child”.
The tenacity of a Sakerette can be found not only in academic achievement but also in the ability to adapt to the changing scenes of life. I believe this strength arises in part from the grounding we received as part of the Christian ethos from that elite institution-SBC, during the formative years of our lives.
I need not recount the many attributes of Sakerettes here but anyone who has charted SakerPride’s massive archives would struggle to disagree with me.
However, on a recent visit to the SBC campus I was concerned at the state of disrepair of some parts of the infrastructure – disrepair which goes beyond the normal wear and tear associated with time and ageing.
Notwithstanding some misgivings, (which are justified), ExSSA UK felt turning a blind eye was unhelpful and could risk instilling in young minds the negative social attitude we all learned in the parable of “The Good Samaritan”
In this regard, ExSSA UK reached out to promote the legacy of Christian teaching – being emissaries of good will and lending a hand- just like others did for us back in 1962 .
The SITL project itself has been positively received – judging from the donor list and in spite of the “Whys and Wherefores”. I am encouraged by this positive outcome for all stakeholders.
As Project Leader and the shadow behind the “SITL” initiative, I hope this transformation of the Food & Nutrition” Lab will set the spot light on more exciting projects which enhance the learning experience of our students.
Where can we see the Project Going?
Anywhere Faith Leads it.

SITL Projects involve the participation of every ExSSAN at any time. (See Pictures below of Dr. Doreen McGough & Ms Emma Najeme and SBC students –“Stepping” for ExSSA UK at the Equipment Handing over Ceremony on Sunday 3rd April 2016)

We have set the pace for high quality sustainable projects for the School and we welcome other “Steppers”

We call it “Stepping” – With you Egbe, this may soon become part of the Saker lexicon! In this context, it means standing up for positive action – Action 4 Words - the “Show Show” for the benefit of SBC direct!!!
“A city built on a hill cannot be hidden” “How beautiful to walk in the steps of the Saviour” - Stepping in the light .

These songs from our SBC days evoke imagery of what happens when we adopt a positive attitude to the tasks and challenges of life. And the smile of the students placing up the SITL logo in the Lab says it all for me – need I ask for more? (See picture to the right.)

And YES – in shadowing this project, I have also placed my own Steps on that solid rock upon which our Christian hope lies. A personal journey of finding myself by losing it in the Service of others:

Walking in footsteps of gentle forbearance
Footsteps of faithfulness, Mercy & Love
Looking to Christ for his Grace freely promised

I know you have said so before but I say it again to all the donors and … hear hear - The Brightened Teens class of ’78 for their quiet “blowing the fire” of this Project and in Memory of our named sisters.
The Principal Ms Stella Matuke who had to triple her steps to keep in step with me and the Faith,
And of course to SakerPride for her ever ready “put wedge” support. Thank You

ExSSA UK is still “Stepping” towards the final Phase 4 completion scheduled for July 2016.
Watch this Space for exciting messages from our PR Team for the forthcoming ExSSA UK Convention (26-28th August 2016). There is room for more “Give Back project” initiatives and our vibrant President Ms Irene Tamajong (Plucky ’77) awaits to welcome as many SakerPride Readers as can make it across the Pond!!

PLEASE CLICK ON THIS IMAGE TO VIEW  PROFESSIONAL PICTURE ALBUM
IT STILL AIN'T OVER! THE FAIRY TALE CONTINUES ...
ENTER THE "FIELDING GIRLS"!!!!
Oh, the LESSONS that can and ought to be learned from this whole STEPPING IN THE LIGHT PROJECT in general, and this particular "WINDOWS/FIELDING PHASE" of it!!! Here are a few; Just 4 actually:

1. COMMITMENT, DETERMINATION and DEDICATION are what get things done, far better - and faster than sheer NUMBERS!
Six (06) Women have achieved, in a couple of months, what it may have taken a thousand women decades of disagreement and endless red tape to accomplish.

2. OUTSIDE THE BOX, UNRESTRAINED, UNCONFINED GENEROSITY:
Of the 6 "FIELDING" women who donated their hard earned money towards this phase of the project, just 3 are SAKERETTES: The eldest - Sis EDITH FIELDING SOYOMBO, (Class of 1976 and President of ExSSA-LONDON/UK), and the 2 youngest - PATIENCE FIELDING KAMBOU (Class of 1984 and member of ExSSA-DC) and the "Last Coco" - BOH FIELDING GEH (Class of 1987 and Public Relations Officer of the SAKERETTES TRANSGLOBAL ALLIANCE - STA*)!!!!
Now, instead of the 3 NON-SAKERETTES to take a "WETIN CONSARN ME FOR OKRO SOUP?" stance, they dug deep into their pockets to help, understanding that doing something to make ANY girl child's educational experience better, is a WORTHY CAUSE, period!!!

3. THE BEAUTY OF SEAMLESS, UNFETTERED COLLABORATION, PURE TRUST/TRUSTWORTHINESS, EXEMPLARY TOGETHERNESS, REAL UNITY OF PURPOSE & GENUINE SISTERHOOD:
The average SAKERETTE does, indeed, care about her Alma Mater, but not too many are as driven, passionate, thorough, conscientious, meticulous, dynamic, PERSONAL AGENDA-free and TRUSTWORTHY as Class of 1978's Lady Kokovi Bodylawson Kale, Leader of this FOOD & NUTRITION LAB PROJECT is, who has not hesitated to pay her own fare to and from Cameroon and sink her own funds, not to talk of her TIME, into this project! That's just the STRAIGHT UP TRUTH, and that is certainly what her Chapter President, Ma Edith Fielding Soyombo, took into consideration before having the confidence to turn to her SISTERS and say, "WONA SHAKE SKIN, AH BEG"! And the fact that they "SHOOK SKIN" accordingly, speaks VOLUMES as well, since we all know that there are, in fact, some siblings who have not talked to or set eyes on each other since their last appearance in COURT, (or on the Pala-Pala Field), and who just cannot agree on ANYTHING; even something as simple as what color "ashwabi" to wear for their own father's "cry die", to talk less of whether it should be Lace or Wax for the "material";  Gele, Hat, Fascinator or flowing, waist/ankle-length weaves for the head gear!!!!
